Storytime!
Early last week, Choppy and I were on our normal morning walk. It’s very dark outside for the start of these walks now, with the only light coming from the moon, street lamps, and any passing cars. As we were walking up the street, Choppy spied something underneath one of our neighbor’s cars – it was clearly an animal, but I didn’t know what kind because I can’t see it in the dark. I was thinking possum or raccoon. So I’m chasing Choppy around the car while Choppy chases whatever it is which is underneath the car, trying to use the flashlight on my phone to get a glimpse of whatever it was that caught Choppy’s attention. Eventually, I see what it is: a kitten. Not so small that it would still be with its mother, but not much bigger than that. I made a grab for it (because apparently living with Schooner has taught me nothing about being attacked by cats), which gave it a chance to make a break for some nearby bushes.
The next morning, Choppy and I are back out for our walk. About two houses past where we had seen the kitten the previous day, Choppy sees another animal. Immediately, I think it’s the kitten again. When I see the little creature, I see it’s much smaller than a kitten – it’s a mouse, which relieves me. That poor kitten was traumatized enough being chased around by Choppy and me the previous day. Choppy happily chases the little mouse around, trying to catch it, while I watch.
Until the mouse decides its best escape route is right up my leg.
Now, I’m dancing around trying to get the mouse off of my leg. It quickly lets go, but it doesn’t go far once it is back on the ground, so I’m jumping and yelping and waking up everyone on the block at 5:40 AM as I try to dodge being climbed up a second time. Choppy thinks this is all great fun and is running around and trying to catch the mouse and likely hoping we can do it all again the next day.
Thankfully, the mouse finally ran off (probably because it was going deaf from my shrieking), I dragged Choppy away, and there were no further wildlife incidents last week. But I’m still going to keep a wary eye open for mice.

It would have! If I have to live through this sort of thing, I might as well be able to show off what happened to me!

I would have fainted. I don’t mind most wildlife when it’s out IN the wild, but as soon as it touches me? Done. lol. There are few exceptions to this rule but basically if it moves really fast, scuttles, creeps, has more than four legs or a tail longer than its body, or isn’t “cute”, lol, I prefer to keep my distance.

I would have preferred to keep my distance from this one as well – thankfully, we have had no further mouse incidents.

I don’t mind mice, but can imagine you doing the two step with one. Hope the kitten is OK though. It’s always annoying when something unnerving occurs at its most silent part of the day! Maggie has got me up a couple of times in the night (around 2 to 3 am) and our back gate not only bangs but bites me when I close it. Hubby has promised to replace the latch with a bolt soon.

Oh, the gate sounds unpleasant. I have had more than a few skinned ankles thanks to doors and gates that shut faster than expected.
As for the kitten, I saw him underneath our porch late in the afternoon yesterday. Apparently, being chased by Choppy only encouraged him to move closer to us. I left him some food and water, which had disappeared within a couple hours. I put out some more this morning. I don’t want another cat, but I also can’t stand to see a kitty suffer. This poor kitty is so little, I can’t imagine things are easy for him.

I am very worried this will be the case!

Have you got him a cushion yet? 🙂

I don’t even know if he’s the one eating yet – first things first. I have gotten some OK looks at him – he definitely bears a resemblance to Schooner, if Schooner was even more wild and crazed than he is.

Hilarious, but i’m glad you don’t live next to me!

On the plus side, I bet I taught that mouse a lesson about climbing up people, so perhaps he wouldn’t do it to you if you were to come across him!

Hahahahaha no wonder there was no wildlife seen after that…you scared them all away for awhile 🙂
Oh, the little kitty, Schooner needs a little kitty sibling. 🙂
I would be stressing just knowing it is out there alone in the wild .

We actually have a fair number of feral cats around – they come by the bird feeders and rile up Schooner. I’m sure this little guy is the offspring of one of them.

And those were just the animals we saw on the walk – none of the rest of the things that go on.

That is quite a ‘Story’ sorta funny, but sorta not. Be mindful, as you must know that the kitten could have “earmites, fleas & worms” which the kittens I rescued near us were infested with. Somebody dumped a litter, on the side of the road…biking with my then 1 1/2 year old daughter, we found them. One died in my arms, a passing car brought the other 3 to our house they kept one…we kept the sister & brother & had them treated & then spayed & neutered….the girl lived over 21 years! Good kitties!

If he keeps coming around, he’s definitely going to get trapped and taken to the vet for a checkup and fixing (even if he goes back outside, I’ll feel better knowing he won’t be making more kittens). I haven’t seen him since the day before yesterday, though the food I left out disappeared.

LMAO! So funny, I can just imagine it. Well, at least it wasn’t a skunk… now THAT would ruin your day big time.

I am still living in fear of the day Choppy finds one – Izzy has gotten into two now. Perhaps Choppy knows certain animals are not to be messed with.

It is a game of chance (and chicken). Wisdom is the better part of valor, but sometimes curiosity and desire to chase overrules wisdom. I even had a cat get sprayed once. 😦 Not nice!

My parents always have them around – I am shocked Choppy hasn’t gotten sprayed out there, especially as she spends plenty of time there.

That’s funny. Sorry I don’t mean to laugh 🙂
You can never make assumptions of what it may be when it comes to what Choppy was chasing.
Glad you got away safe. I bet the neighbours hate you now.

Oh, it was funny almost immediately after (and even while it was happening, I could see the humor in it)!

Oh my! My first thoughts also, when you started the story, was that is was going to be a skunk. Glad it wasn’t. I hope the kitten is okay. The story of the mouse reminded me of Hickory, Dickory, Dock. I think I may just work at day car way too many days. LOL Mom is deathly afraid of mice/rats. Several years back, she went into her wash room and saw one. She started jumping up and down, screaming. By the time she stopped, she had stomped the poor little (according to her, not so little) thing to death.

Thankfully, I’m not scared of them! It just isn’t pleasant to have one crawling up your leg in the dark, first thing in the morning!

I can’t even imagine as I am terrified of them. It stems from my childhood when I saw a news program talking about rats eating babies in their cribs in NY City. I was sure I was going to be eaten alive by the critters. I have gotten some better, but do NOT like those little suckers.

Oh, that would put a scare into anyone (says someone who still checks pools for sharks, just in case – I mean, I saw Jaws. You never can be too safe…).

OMG! Ha ha ha! Sorry to laugh at your freak out 😉 Thank goodness I’ve not had a mouse on me, however I can say I found a stink bug in my pants. It was a freak dance of epic proportions… and without pants, as I danced out of them. So gross! 🤤😨😠

Oh, it was hilarious. Even while it was happening, I could see how it was going to be funny almost immediately afterwards.
As for the stink bug, ugh! They are everywhere here. They (and the box elder bugs) got so bad on and in our house that we had to spray for them, which I hated doing. However, I hated being swarmed by them every time I walked outside more.
