A while ago, I had two quick posts on the Jefferson County Potter’s Field, which is an old cemetery near our house (those posts are here and here).
In that second update, I shared a picture of the stone which marks the cemetery. Here’s how it looked then:
Clearly, something was getting fixed up. It turns out, there wasn’t just a new garden in store for us, but the county cleaned up the stone marker and put in a bench!
It has become a very nice place to sit and enjoy some quiet time. And for those who are interested in the history of the field, there is a new sign up with information on the small cemetery.

How lovely, but sad the records have been lost.

It is – at least they’re keeping up the cemetery, though. Better that than nothing.

It’s always nice when effort is put into improving an area.

It really is. That it’s nice and close to our house is an added bonus.

I’m so glad they added the bench. It makes it a place you want to go and sit a while.

Nice to be able to contemplate the lives of those buried there.

They really are. And just a short walk from our house, if we want to go sit in the country and enjoy some quiet for a few minutes.

It’s really pleasant – more so than you would expect from a cemetery.

Agreed. Although I have seen some of the most beautiful cemeteries. I used to work very near one and I’m nice days it was a pleasant place to take a walk and have lunch.

I actually walk in one when we go to football games, depending on where we stay. It’s peaceful and pleasant.

I love cemeteries. When people bother to put effort into upkeeping and improving them, I feel very happy. This made me very happy

I particularly like this one, as it could so easily have been forgotten and plowed under as another field.

Glad they made the improvements. It does look like a really peaceful area to sit a spell. Wonder if there are any locals left who remember any of the souls buried there? It’s sad when records are lost/destroyed.

I wonder the same thing – I suspect there are, but not many. Chances are if you ended up there, you probably didn’t have much stability in your life.

Sort of sad, isn’t it. But, at least they had a place to be laid to rest.

That’s such a big improvement. It’s good to see the site restored and respected.

I agree. It’s nice they made it a welcoming place as well. If others grow to love it, there will be more people to keep it up and make sure it is remembered going forward.

Life before Social Services was pretty grim. (Without getting too political, it seems there are some who want to send us back to that level of care. 😦 )

That is really amazing. So lovely to see people are taking some care in the upkeep !!! For me it is a huge eye-opener, the cemeteries here in SA are a shocker and it is so so sad.

That’s too bad – the big cemeteries here are usually in very good shape. Smaller ones like this are easily forgotten, though many are kept up nicely, as this one now is.
