(Does it count as traveling if you’re only five miles from home? I’m pretending it does.)
Faced with a new house full of boxes and home improvement projects last Saturday, I decided the best way to tackle the tasks at hand was to ignore them. And so, I took Choppy to the local dog park for the first time.
Based on dog-related amenities, I think we chose the new house well.
Jefferson County Dog Park is 109 acres of free-running dog happiness. You can get the exact details on the park at the link, but there are four fenced-in areas, with two each for large and small dogs. The park is about three miles off of I-94, about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee. There aren’t any water features at the park, but there is plenty of room to roam and there are many places to make new doggy friends.

If you want to visit the Park and are traveling between Madison and Milwaukee on I-94, just get off on Exit 267 (Wisconsin 26/Watertown/Johnson Creek) and head south on Wisconsin 26. For those of you who are directionally challenged, that’s the direction away from the Outlet Malls (I know, sad). Just under three miles down Wisconsin 26, you’ll see the signs directing you to the dog park. Follow those, and your dog will be happy!

Oh, most definitely! We’ll be back many times (and not just because I bought the annual pass – but don’t discount that as a reason to return, either!).

That is good to know. I bet Choppy is the luckiest doggie in the world then. Enjoy your new area. And for those boxes, just ignore them..lol.
Take care love.

I’m not sure she is the luckiest dog in the world, but she definitely lives a mostly worry-free life!
As for the boxes, they continue to be ignored (though one wouldn’t know that based on how little i have been online this week – blame that on work. And travel. And laziness).

I wish we had something like this here! My dogs would love it.
How happy Choppy looks 😀

It’s wonderful to have it here – our place in the city happened to be in a suburb that seemed to go out of their way to make dogs unwelcome – they weren’t even allowed in parks on leashes! This is a welcome change with the new place.

There is a dog park on the way up the hill at the end of my street… even though I’m not a dog person, I always enjoy stopping to watch the happy dogs chasing balls and each other around without being constrained on a leash. My cats have not visited.

I’m pretty sure the cats would have a far more…interesting…time than your typical dog!

Definitely counts! Hope you’re settling well into your new home (and the mountain of boxes is getting easier to climb)

I’m glad you think it counts (we’ll take all the support we can get!).
The box mountain continues to look daunting. Thankfully, we found the alcohol cache, so things are looking positive on that front.

The park looks lovely. I think Choppy is going to enjoy it– if he can train you to back off. A dog needs his space, don’t you know?

I really do cramp Choppy’s style. Soon, she’ll want to be dropped off a couple blocks away.

We haven’t taken Bosco to a dog park in a few years .. maybe we will have to change that soon!
My husband and I are looking to move soon. I am NOT looking forward to packing / unpacking at all!! 🙂

You can do like us – just leave everything packed! (Though that doesn’t solve the ‘getting it packed’ problem). We closed over a month ago at this point, and I just got moved into my closet this week.

At least she stays with you. If I let Wren off the leash, she’d be long gone. I keep hoping someday I’ll be able to walk her off-leash. Hope springs eternal. 😉

I am pretty sure that she only stays with me at the dog park because all the squirrels and other small creatures have been scared away – the moment she sees one of those, I’m pretty sure she’d be gone!

Oooh heaven! You made the best choice (between the boxes and a walk, I mean – and placement of house too). And of course once Choppy is hungry and tired, it will be all ‘Sarah, let’s go home now, stop talking to that boring other human!) 😉

Ha! Exactly. And I got plenty of boxes unpacked this weekend. Well, “plenty” being like 15. That seemed like a lot.

That IS a lot! I had several boxes hanging around at least a year after moving 😉

I need to have you evaluate all my unpacking.

How fun! My dog hardly ever gets to go to the park. Too many irresponsible dog owners around here who don’t keep their dogs in check.

I know the feeling – Choppy is one I have to keep an eye on, though. If she gets antsy, we’re gone, so she doesn’t become that dog (and I don’t become that owner).

Dog parks are a lot of fun and the right place to be off-leash!
So many smells and friends and running… ah, paradise!

It’s definitely the best place to be off-leash (though I did have a friend whose dog got to spend the night at another nearby large one when she decided she didn’t remember her name and had no desire to go home for the night. So maybe not the best place for that dog to be off-leash).

Eh, those are the chances you take with off leash. At least the place is fenced in and nothing too dangerous inside. . I worry about Breck, he’s fiercely independent and would think he can be on his own. He’d not be too happy to sleep outside tho and not on his Temperpedic bed! Oreo won’t leave our side and is very obedient. I don’t have to worry about him.

Good to see you still had time for a beautiful walk, even with all the stress from moving. We’re also done with the move, and I still have no idea where I live, because I’ve been so busy with the renovation, I didn’t even left the house. Your post inspired me to go out for a bit haha 🙂 Have a lovely weekend!

Everyone needs a break from moving! I am excellent at this particular part of moving. Unpacking? Not so much!
And glad to hear you’re done with your move. I hope your unpacking is going far better than mine!

I can’t agree more Sarah! It can become very tiring so a break is always welcomed.
I didn’t unpack that much as I started the renovation. Now the entire house is chaos 🙂 I guess packing will happen in a while from now haha. Have a lovely new week!

Well, it is easier to deal with renovation before you get fully moved in, right? I think it is an excellent reason for postponement.

Yes, quite 🙂 It’s much harder after you unpack. I’ll get to it as well, soon.

Choppy probably feels like she’s the queen of the world. But in answer to your question, it probably counts as traveling if you go around the block. 😀 Sarah, you and Choppy have a great weekend!

I think I should start counting that as traveling – in which case, we get a couple trips in every day (to say nothing of the many miles I commute to work!).

It is sorely tempting every time I go to the basement to fetch another one that needs attention – boxes are definitely less fun than the park!

What a paradise! I live int eh city, so most dog parks here are just fenced pieces of pavement – the ones that start out grass don’t last long! Luckily I have a nice yard that backs onto some woods, and my dogs are happiest there.
Have you been reading The Martian yet?

Oh, most definitely. I blame it entirely for the sad state of blogging that occurred around here last week, because I was obsessively reading with any spare moment I had (or listing on Audible as I got the chance as well). It was SO GOOD. Feel free to give me recommendations on books any time.

We are getting a small dog park here that is not far from my house. Son has two dogs so when he comes to visit he can take them there. It is wonderful to see dogs roaming freely and safely!
