In our first installment of Choppy by Number last week, I looked at how many times Choppy barked over the course of a day. This week, I decided to determine how many treats I gave Choppy on a random day.
I should start by noting that Choppy loves her treats. I am pretty sure she could eat an unlimited number of them over the course of any given day, should she be given that option. As a result, I do make at least some attempt to limit how many she has, because I really want to indulge her more or less constantly throughout the day. That said, I knew I fed her a larger number than was probably recommended. I just didn’t know how many, so I thought keeping track of the number I fed her would prove enlightening.
It did. Just not in a very good way.
It turns out, Choppy does get more than an average number of treats over the course of a day. A lot more. Seriously. A LOT MORE.

I’ll just come right out and say it. Over the course of the day, Choppy had 31 treats.
Yes, 31.
No dog needs that many treats. [Note: if Choppy could talk, this is where she would pipe up to note that she doesn’t need 31 treats. She needs more]
Unfortunately, it gets worse, because she got more than just these treats. She had her two daily cans of dog food, some raw meat, some rice and a piece of candy corn (yes, I marked that down when she unexpectedly ate it).
I can’t eat that much, and I weigh twice as much as she does.
I think we can call this one official: I have been treat-shamed. It’s time to cut out some of Choppy’s daily treats.
[Note: In related news, how soon until there is a “Choppy by Number” in which we detail Choppy’s weight loss? I’m guessing sooner rather than later]

She doesn’t look that fat! Hmm – fast metabolism? hehe My dogs get 2 to 4 treats a day; mostly used as bribes to get the old boy outside. I bought smaller dog biscuits, as I was trying to get the old boy to slim down a bit. Good Luck in withstanding the “puppydog eyes” 😀

She is maybe a few pounds overweight, but the vet hasn’t expressed concern over it (she is naturally a large dog in terms of weight). Obviously, when it gets to the point where she needs to lose weight, I’ll do what I need to!

Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
I thought that instead of the Afternoon video for a while that I would reblog a post about animals – all kinds since that is after music one of my most enjoyable interests. I have been following Choppy for a little while and I think this post is probably a good lesson for all of us…. keep a food diary for ourselves and are dogs and see how many treats we are really eating….poor Choppy.

Thanks for the reblog! It was really eye-opening to keep track of what I feed her over the course of the day – I definitely recommend others do it. It’s so easy to just toss her a treat and not pay attention to how many I am giving her. I want her to be here as long as possible, so many fewer treats are in her future!

It is tough though – they have a look they give you which conveys deep starvation and deep hurt if you do not give them that piece of cheese..now.. Look forward to following your life with Choppy as we are without a manipulator for the time being until we move house…

Hello!
Chase has a similar problem, he loves treats too much and use to always puppy dog eye me into giving more, we had to cut down significantly as well!
P.S. I have nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award on my blog, come check it out!
