On Monday, I looked out the kitchen window and got an unexpected surprise – this hawk, sunning itself on our deck (the picture is blurry because I took it at a distance so as not to disturb it). We see them from the deck regularly in the sky overhead and sometimes on the ground, but I’ve never seen a hawk actually on the deck before.

Oh, and even though it looks like it, the hawk wasn’t about to fly away here. It was just spreading its wings and tail. I read online that this could be mantling (where the hawk is protecting its prey), but the hawk didn’t have anything. The other option is that it was just sunning itself. This seems more likely, as it was a hot and sunny day.
