If you’ve been to Key West, you’ve seen the chickens. They’re everywhere. Over on the Travel Bits blog, the most recent post is on those crazy critters. A sample:
Back in 2004, Key West decided to attempt to reduce the chicken population on the island by hiring a Chicken Catcher. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Although he captured over 500 chickens in just a few months, the job was not without its troubles. People taunted him, the chickens proved elusive, and the Chicken Catcher didn’t feel as if they city truly supported his efforts. Less than a year into the job, the Chicken Catcher claimed his nerves were frayed, and he quit the job.

Mmm…now I feel hungry for some fried chicken…

I remember when cats were rampant everywhere in Key West. Seems the chickens have taken their place. When we’re there we stay at a place called Westwinds. There were 3 or 4 chickens that just had the run of the property. Pretty funny. 😃

I feel like the chickens multiply in number every year down there (and there are still plenty of cats running around – I have a lot of pictures of them, too).

We see a lot more chickens than cats now though. Kinda weird. 😃

Sarah, I’m driving to Key West this weekend. I watch out for those chickens ans rosters. I bet Choppy and Scooner enjoyed them when you were down there. Gary

Oh, have a great time! The drive is amazing, make sure to stop and enjoy some of the views. And I doubt you will be able to miss the chickens and roosters, they’re all over the place.

I cannot remember if I did see many chickens and roosters when I have been at Key West about nine years ago. But I remember a green parrot that was talking into an open waste pipe, that gave him a very, very strange voice. 😀

Ha! I can’t say I’ve ever seen that in Key West. The chickens, though, they are hard to miss these days. Or perhaps I’ve been going long enough that I know where to look for them.

Even when I went about 15 years ago, there were TONS of them everywhere! They never bothered me though, then again, I wasn’t driving.

I have never seen one get hit by a car and I’ve been there many times. I’m sure it happens, but those things seem pretty wily. Now, more than one has nearly run into me while walking, so apparently they don’t view people as much of a threat.

They’re like that on the Big Island too. And even their ‘cousins,’ the turkeys are everywhere. So odd and yet so endearing.

I was shocked at the numbers of them on Kaua’i when we were there a few years ago. I think what we’ve learned is that chickens love warm islands.

Do you get a house and car with that job?? I could do that job quite happily!

If you got a house and a car, I would never have let anyone know about it, because I would want to apply (I would even volunteer not to have the car).

So are there randow eggs all over the place? With the Roosters around……never know what’s going to hatch….they must find enough to eat.

It must be a symphony with all the rise-and-shine Cock-doodle-doooooos!

Oh, it is – it’s one of the reasons they need someone to trap them. People don’t really appreciate the rooster wake up calls.

You know, I’ve never seen an egg! I need to look next time I am there. You would think there would be some around, but I’ve never noticed.

Nothing a few foxes couldn’t control. 😉

If they ate iguanas as well, those would be the happiest foxes in the world. Between the chickens and the iguanas, it would be a feast.

We love your travel bits books. I used to fly a corporate jet for a gazillionaire. He kept a 117 foot yacht down in Florida and I’d often fly one of the planes down to Key West (that was a short landing strip for our plane and not one I looked forward to). when he’d take the boat down there from FLL. But if he was just going to be on the boat a couple of days in Key West, we’d stay in a B and B rather than fly the jet north to be used for executive transport. I LOVED the stay down there. We stayed at the Bottle Inn, a really neat B and B and to this day I still order my Key West Aloe products for my skin. Thanks for the memory (and now I want chicken for dinner).

I randomly know that runway is short – Southwest used to fly down there. Every time you landed, they warned you that the runway was super short and you should brace yourself for an exciting landing.
I’ll have to check out the Bottle Inn – we stay at all sorts of places on the island, but we’re always in search of the perfect place.
