Lately, I’ve been sort of obsessed with the Happiness Project. As part of it, I (finally!) started listening to a podcast, the Happier Podcast. Gretchen Rubin, the author of the Happiness Project, hosts the podcast with her sister.
One topic they discussed as part of their podcast was a creating an “18 for ’18” list – 18 things you want to do in 2018. They aren’t quite resolutions, but more fun (or somewhat fun) things that you want to do in 2018. This sounded like a great idea to me. There are so many things I want to do, and I fully intend to do, but which I put off or just make excuses not to do. Then, time passes, and those things never get done, even though they are things I really want to do.
As noted, this sounded like a great idea to me, and so I came up with a list of 18 for ’18 – 18 things I want to do in 2018.

In case you can’t read them, here are the items on the list:
- Bake Cookies Once Per Month
- Volunteer Somewhere
- Plant 100 Flower Bulbs
- Plant an Herb Garden
- Send Birthday Cards
- Start a Podcast with Paul
- Organize My Recipe Binder
- Find a Painting/Photo for My Home Office
- Take a Shopping Day Alone
- Buy Proper Makeup/Toiletry Bags
- Get a Painting of Choppy
- Go Out to Lunch with Paul Once Per Month
- Visit a New Baseball Stadium
- Take a Class
- Eat at 6 New-to-Me Restaurants
- Do 6 Wisconsin Travel Related Blog Posts
- Plan an Epic 40th Birthday Party for 2019
- Take 3 Bike Rides
Over the course of 2018, I plan to periodically update the blog with my progress on the 18 for ’18 (I created a category for the posts). As they are fun things, hopefully they will provide some enjoyable content for everyone here – and, now that I’ve posted that I’m doing this, it will keep me accountable to others to get the things done.

A very nice idea and a good handwriting also!!

I think it will be fun – at least, what I’ve gotten done so far has been fun. I am working on doing a first update post (though that might not happen until next week).

I’m so glad I came across it – the few things I’ve done so far have been great. It’s like having resolutions I actually want to do.

Your ‘bucket list’….now for the check marks. I’m shredding 15 years of bank statements & pres. slips ..& old printed emails….
I hope the shredder didn’t burn out…

An unpleasant task – but it will be great when it is done!

Great idea. I love the idea of a painting of Choppy.

That’s one of my favorites. I have an idea of what I want, I just need to find someone to do it for me.

If you can’t get a painting, could you have a favourite photograph done on canvas? We did with Barney and it’s fabulous. We’re hoping to get a good shot of Maggie to do the same.

That’s my fallback option – I won’t be upset with either one!

I’m so glad I came across it on the podcast. They really are like fun resolutions. I feel like they will make the year just that much better.

yes I really like them. They are ideas but not resolutions to drop!

A very comprehensive list and good idea.

Thanks! I actually have a list of resolutions as well. Most of those aren’t terribly fun (and I’m probably doing better at these fun ones than the other).

Well it’s now 17th Jan and I still can’t decide what resolutions to make, so think I might have failed.

It’s probably easier to make them some other time of the year. I mean, if I had tried to start the Dog Walk Challenge in January way back when, I wouldn’t have lasted that long. By the time the cold weather started (because I started in May), I was already a long way in and didn’t want to give up!

Well things are beginning to take shape bit by bit so I’ll be up and running soon. 😊 definitely doing the ‘yard view’ this year, that’s already on the go, but wish I too had a pond!

This is a great idea! I may be inspired to make my own list 🙂 Love your plans!

You should definitely make a list for yourself – if nothing else, even getting something done (rather than everything) is better than not doing anything.

Well, you’ve let the cat out of the bag with number 17! I can’t believe Choppy is nearly 40.

Ha! Choppy misses those younger days. And I still have over a year – but if you’re planning an epic bash, you have to start early.

I think one thing you DON’T need to do: improve your travelswithchoppy.com 👍🏻😄

Thank you! (Though based on how long it has taken me to get to comments from the weekend, I could probably improve my response time.)

What a great idea! You have some wonderful things on your list. The restaurant one would be hard for me to do, unless I travel somewhere. Living in a small town we don’t even have 6 different restaurants. LOL Good luck with all of these! Looking forward to hearing about how you are doing with them.

Funny enough, I’m already halfway done with that one! It helps that we were on a short trip over the weekend. I’m guessing that particular one will be done by the end of February, if not sooner.
I’m planning to do a bit of an update soon, as there are already updates (as you can see from this comment).

They should be good – so long as I remember to take pictures. I’m not the best at that.

I’m looking forward to those immensely. My list of resolutions (because I have one of those, too) includes more gardening. Paul and I have an area of the yard we would like to fix up. I’m guessing it will become home to many of those bulbs.

Thanks! I have no idea how I have nice handwriting, as lawyers are notorious for their bad handwriting (not quite doctor bad, but not good).

However, the handwriting is wonderful. Think also usable for OCR. 😉

I am so glad I could inspire another list. I have to say, the few things I’ve done so far have been great (and my co-workers are very happy that they reaped the rewards of me checking January off of the cookie baking list today).

I love this; it’s a great idea. 🙂
I particularly like your priorities and that you’ve kept your goals doable!
eg Bake cookies once a month versus Go on 3 bikes rides. 😀

I think the reasonableness is key – I can get through these. Plus, they aren’t nebulous goals (like “exercise more”) but concrete things to do.
Funny you should mention the bike rides. Paul saw that and wondered why it was such a low number. When I asked him how many rides we took last summer, he realized what I had – we went on zero bike rides. I’m pretty sure we can get three in.

Baking cookies once a month and visiting new baseball stadiums are my favorites – I love cookies and baseball. It is such a pity that baseball is not very popular here in Germany. 😉

I’m definitely looking forward to those. I’ve been to over half of the major league parks here in the States, so it’s getting harder to get to new ones (though I did get a new one in this last season – it just requires some significant travel these days).

It’s always better writing things like this down. Bravo. And here’s to future checking them off. 💕

If I don’t write them down and show them to others, I know I just won’t get them done.
And checking them off – four checks so far, though three are on the same thing – feels great!

You should definitely do it! I am already enjoying these (after all, it’s part of the point – make an effort to do things you want to do, but wouldn’t otherwise do as often as you want)
