Something tells me only one of these two is going to let us know when the raccoons show up.

Cats are “on the alert” even when asleep.

This is a good point. Unlike Choppy, who will sleep through people arriving at the house or cats coming up and sniffing her or any number of things you would think might wake her up.

haha Guard Dog! 🙂

So long as the raccoons don’t start offering her treats in return for access to the bird feeders or house, we’re OK.

I wouldn’t put it past the sneaky little bandits! 😀

Ahhh ..they are doing the raccoon watch in shifts 🙂 Schooner is just getting a quick nap in …I mean, why not? 🙂

I am pretty sure Schooner doesn’t see what all the raccoon fuss is about – Choppy, meanwhile, feels the need to chase off any and all raccoons which come near the house.

That’s so cute how they’re snuggled up together. He trusts her.

He does – now, the other way? Not so much – Choppy has been on the receiving end of far too many cat swats to ever completely trust Schooner.

They surprise you, though, how quickly they become “family”. I’ve had animals that barely tolerated each other, and yet they’d bond together against “foes”. I had cats who hated each other, but if I accidentally stepped on a paw, the cat who hated the one who screeched came running to defend them. I see Ginny and Chase defend each other, and they never get along. My first cat was a big marshmallow who bossed our gentle dog around. He’d defend her, too, though, if he thought she needed it. I always found their dynamics fascinating.

So very, very true. Animal antics are so intriguing 🙃I think that’s why we love them!

Two Mom Turkeys in the backyard yesterday afternoon with about 15 chicks, squirrel observing this nursery from a picnic table bench…..wanted to get at the bird food…..I quietly went outside to take a pic, chickies flew in trees…everyone dispersed! 😹

Oh, so cool! I haven’t seen any of the chicks this year – or if I have, I haven’t realized what they are. Perhaps ours are behind yours a bit, because I’ve definitely seen plenty of turkeys this year.

I like to think Choppy would defend Schooner if it came to it – she does come running when something is going on with her, though I usually suspect Choppy thinks Schooner is getting food or she will get a chance to see him get humiliated.

😀 Every once in a while Wren gets scent of something going through the yard and goes berserk. We never know what it is– deer, fox, coyote, bear– but aren’t willing to let her out to find out. Could be a skunk!

I live in fear of the day Choppy decides to tangle with a skunk – so far, so good, and I know she has had opportunities at my parents’ house.

I keep a bottle of ‘Skunk Out’ on hand for just such emergencies. Tomato juice will do, but you have to keep rotating it out (good excuse to have Bloody Marys).

I don’t think Paul would object to having to have more Bloody Marys!

That is such a cute picture. Choppy is on watch, for sure.

She sits on the deck the same way, waiting for them. She does the same thing at my parents’ house. She actually sits in the same place the dog we had growing up sat, waiting for the raccoons.

What does she do when she sees one?

Goes after it – but they are quick to head up the trees or to the other side of the fence. I think they keep an eye out for her as well!
