As I have noted in the comments, Paul and I spent the weekend in (chilly) northern Wisconsin snowmobiling. It was a most excellent time. Below are some pictures from the quick trip, with some explanations (as I am pretty sure this is not something people engage in, in most places in the country). There is also a short video, which should give you a bit of a feeling for what it is like.
Date: January 17, 2017
Location: Home
Length: 1.8 Miles
Who: Sarah

Now, the video. The sled ahead of us is my dad; I’m riding on the back of our snowmobile with Paul. We pass two other people part way through the video as we cross a bridge; you can see the latter of them putting up a fist. It indicates he’s the last person in the group. You can see from the video that these are winding paths (and this one isn’t particularly windy), so this tells you that no one else is coming around a bend unexpectedly. You can also see some ‘traffic signs’ on the right hand sign before we go around a curve. Even though it’s a path not meant for cars, the same signs get used.

OMG what fun!!
I’ve actually never been snowmobiling… not that I’ve not had opportunities… it’s just too cold for me! The bar hopping part does make me want to go tho! 🍻

The bar hopping is pretty much the best reason to go. It really isn’t that bad, cold-wise, so long as you have the right clothing. I didn’t even have a suit, just my snow pants and regular coat, and I was fine.

Very cool – in so many ways. Molly Malamute keeps telling us she’d like a bit of snow running…she promises not to bite the vehicles there either – only run as fast as!

I bet she would love some snow running! I think Choppy would be happy to give you some of our snow. She likes it, but not so much that she needs all of what we typically have!

That looks like a lot of fun! We don’t have enough snow in my area to do that – unless they have them for rent at the ski resorts in NC. I don’t know. At any rate, I was surprised there were marked trails. I guess I always assumed snowmobiling was an off trail, into the untamed wilderness activity. LOL

No, definitely not a wilderness activity in these parts (and probably most places in the U.S. where there are people). They actually groom the trails as well – it’s quite the operation, and all volunteer-based.

Looks like a great deal of fun & much safer on that road than plowing into trees.

Oh, yes – though most people who plow into trees are probably on the trails (well, they were at least attempting to be on the trails). You get going 60 mph on a snowy, icy curve and those trees can come up quickly!

Looks a lot of fun – but very cold! 🙂

That’s not one we went to! The cold isn’t so bad, you just put on the right clothing, and you can stand some very cold weather.

I just can’t remember being really really cold any more.

I would love to know what it’s like not to remember being cold!

haha In a few months time you might have forgotten? 🙂

I may not remember it well, but the cold is always a sneaking feeling creeping up on me. Even in the middle of summer!

Ah – actually I get it. Even on our worst winter’s day, with howling gales and driving rain, I am Still thankful it is not mid-summer! 🙂

That must have been a fun little getaway. Nice and cold, warmly dressed, nice fires….divine 🙂

The only way to travel in those conditions I should think!

It’s definitely a fun way to travel in these conditions – though it wouldn’t be if you were improperly dressed!

Looks like fun, was choppy leading the way. I did not see him. Have fun but I am so glad we don’t get that much snow here. I have seen it but not very often. 🙂 Jim

Choppy was hanging out at the kennel with Izzy for the weekend – I’m guessing she would have given up chasing the snowmobile shortly after we started out. It’s how she deals with the ATV when we are out on that!

I don’t blame her a bit. It looked way to could any way.

If she had been allowed at the cabin, I think she would have stayed inside with my mom (who didn’t go out with us), and stayed nice and toasty.

It is! Sometimes, a little terrifying as well (though that probably exacerbates the exhilaration factor!).

Cold and not-so-scary (just a little).

Those are serious trails, they make ours look puny! Also amazed at how quiet your sled was!

I have no idea how it sounded quiet on the video – it was very loud (as they all are). I think the wind drowned it out!

This is so good Sarah! I hope you enjoyed your getaway with Paul.

We did – my parents were there as well, so it was great to see them.

Looks like great fun. We had snowmobiles around these parts back in the day before global warming…or whatever modified our winters. Then again we never really had the consistent cold and snowy winters that would spawn snowmobile clubs. Bars? We can’t stop producing them! 🙂

Ha! Wisconsin definitely has both in abundance (as well as lax liquor laws that encourages everyone to partake in both activities together).

Sarah, the snowmobiling looks very fun – I need to try that one day.

If you get the chance, you should definitely try it. It’s sort of like jetskiing in the woods.
