If you’re looking for the answer to Friday’s “Where’s Choppy?” post, it’s here.
This weekend was just beautiful in Wisconsin – and we used it for working in the yard (and yet, I still didn’t get to the weeds in the fire pit, as seen on Friday’s ‘Where’s Choppy?’ post). We also got plenty of walking in!
Walk One:
Date: July 10, 2016
Location: Home
Length: 2.6 Miles
Who: Sarah & Choppy
Walk Two:
Date: July 10, 2016
Location: Home
Length: 1.3 Miles
Who: Sarah, Paul & Choppy
Walk One: There is a reason Choppy looks so exotic. It shall be discussed below.Walk Two: This intense look has nothing to do with bunnies. Choppy is actually scanning this field for woodchucks. Prior to the picture from Walk One, we were passing by this area. Choppy was off of her leash, and I pointed out a woodchuck I saw hanging out way down in this field. I assumed Choppy would chase it, the woodchuck would pop down in its hole, and Choppy would come back. This is NOT how things happened. Choppy chased the woodchuck, but instead of flight, he turned and decided to fight. I think Choppy expected this even less than I did, and she just started barking at him and chasing him around a bit. I eventually retrieved her, but I think that woodchuck had a very bad day thanks to this barking dog (though probably a lot better day than he would have had at the hands of many dogs, who would not have been content to just bark at him).
Well done, C. You are a good girl. My mom thinks your mom is flat out NUTS pointing out a woodchuck. When my mom sees something chaseable she is usually saying, “Don’t look. Don’t look. Don’t look. Don’t look.” I am not such a good girl….
😁 In a meadow behind our house, when our Elkhound was younger, for the “fun of it” I said: “let’s go see the woodchucks”…unti the dog ran so fast, picked up the “chuck”,by the scruff of it’s neck, shook it & that was the end of the “chuck”…then it happened again. “Chucks” are not welcome by gardeners, but I hated knowing my dog had killed an animal…..2 animals.
Oh no! I have never seen Choppy kill an animal – she corners them and barks at them until I show up to take care of the matter (this means offering Choppy a treat and taking her elsewhere, so the poor animal can make an escape).
In my neck of the woods, we call woodchucks “ground hogs.” They have been known to do some pretty significant damage to dogs that try to kill them. I’m glad this one just defended itself and didn’t attack and Choppy just barked and ran around it.
For a slow dog, she is pretty evasive – the groundhog/woodchuck definitely made several attempts to get at her. She chases a lot of raccoons, who will also sometimes turn and fight. I think she knows pretty well when to give up on a fight.
Looks like a clear beautiful day for a walk!

We’ve had an absolutely beautiful summer this year – I worry that once the weather starts turning, we’re going to have a rude awakening for our walks!

In retrospect, I think pointing out the woodchuck was a poor idea!

So long as it doesn’t come out toward me, I’m fine with it!

Nice day to get out and stretch your legs – 2 or 4.

We’ve really been graced with far more beautiful days this summer than we probably deserve!
