This past week, I was over at The Old Fellow Goes Running and saw this post Carl (the “Old Fellow” of the blog’s name) did on his niece, Caron (on Instagram as @this.girl.runs). To summarize – even though you should totally head over there and see the post for yourself – Caron asked Carl to help her train for a half marathon, which he happily did. After their training sessions ended, Caron challenged herself to run at least a mile every day, no matter the weather and no matter how she felt.
For much of this past week, I thought about that post. I walk Choppy twice a day, but those are pretty short walks, except on the weekends. Thanks to Fitbit, I know I walk several miles every day, but that’s mostly done in short spurts. Choppy should get longer walks, but there is always an easily available excuse: it’s cold, I’m tired, I don’t want to wake up earlier. It’s so easy not to take the longer walk, I often find myself doing just that: not taking the longer walk, but settling for the short one. My thoughts kept turning to Caron’s challenge to herself to run a mile a day. A mile isn’t that long – I can walk a mile easily before work or in the evening (because, let’s be clear, neither Choppy nor I is about to become a runner). It’s good for Choppy to get out on a walk, and it’s good for me to do so as well.
Why not? I kept thinking. Why can’t I challenge myself to walk a mile every day with Choppy ? It’s just a little extra effort. Plus, I can blog about it!

And so, it is born: The Dog Walk Challenge. For the month of May, I am going to walk Choppy a mile every day. There are a few caveats: I am going to be on the road a few days this month without Choppy, so I won’t be able to walk her. But I can still get out and walk myself a mile, so I will. Starting tomorrow, I’ll post a short bit about each of our walks a day or two after they happen: the location, who was on the walk, its length, etc. It’s not as much fun for everyone else as the costumes, but hopefully it will be the start to a sustained healthy habit that will keep Choppy around longer (for even more dress up going forward).

Good challenge! I’ll keep my fingers crossed you’ll make it. That reminds me: I should challenge myself to bike more!

If if helps at all, whenever we question Ray’s walk (especially in our Winter) we just remind ourselves that it is Ray’s walk and not ours. Of course we get some spin-off health benefits, but the reason for going out is Ray. By the same argument, sometimes he is happy trotting along, and sometimes he wants to sniff everything in sight. Given that it is Ray’s walk, we try and accommodate him wherever possible. Works for us! 🙂

There have been many a day when I didn’t want to take even the short walks and realized that I was not being fair to Choppy if I didn’t take her out. After all, I am the one that brought her home, not the other way around.

Maggie gets at least one long walk a day, and three others. Of course it helps in a way that we have to take her as we don’t have a garden and it is a definite NO NO to just open the covers and let her out on to the pontoon to take herself!

Choppy used to get a third (brief) walk in the evenings when we were temporarily in the apartment. That one is now her going out before bed on her own – as it was for most of her life before the brief apartment stay. Now, we’re back to two. It works for us, but unlike you, we do have the yard for her to roam about!

Love it! I might just join you in the challenge. (In a week, though. After I’ve slept some… The A2Z left me brain-fried 😀 )

I know the feeling – I figured I had better start sooner rather than later, or I just wouldn’t do it, A to Z brain fry or no! Let me know if you do decide to do it!

I just noticed how much Choppy and Tippy look alike, except for the eye color, of course. Good luck with your walking challenge. It will be good for both you and Choppy. I have been doing a challenge the last couple of years, in the spring, to raise money for Relay For Life. I was just thinking today that I need to get that going this month. Mine is run/walk and usually the challenge is that I will try to do 50 miles during the month and ask people to donate a certain amount of money for each mile I actually run/walk. I know I can’t do every day, so that means some days I will have to do 2 to 3 miles. Thanks to you, I am going to start that today! There’s a 4 mile run at the end of the month I hope to do!

WOW, Sarah thank you so much for the shout outs for both myself and Caron. This is awesome. Already in the comments you have a lot of people cheering you on. It will be fun reading about where your walks are, and how the challenge is going. You are going to be just great, and both yourself and Choppy are going to reap the benefits! 🙂

Thank you for the post on it! I would never have come up with this on my own, and it’s such a great challenge that will be good for both Choppy and me.

What a fun challenge! We can’t wait to share in your walks. By reading – Not walking!! Mom will not walk with me for a mile a day. Mile walks are fun, but rare for us. We’ll share yours though…
Love and licks,

You are welcome to live vicariously through us – Choppy came home completely out-of-breath this morning, so vicarious living may be far more fun than the real thing!

Good for you! I love my Fitbit and wearing it motivates me to walk more and since Orso needs to be walked, I get the double benefit. Plus bonus, Choppy will love it too.

My Fitbit has been awesome for getting me out to walk – I just seem to do it in short spurts, rather than taking the time to do some longer walks. Hopefully this will get me in some extra steps!

Thanks! I need to figure out what works for these. I don’t want them to get boring, but there are only so many variations on “Look, a Redwinged Blackbird!” one can do before everyone is tired of it. I will think of something.

Great challenge idea and your pup will love it! We used to walk our dog every day, probably around a mile also. I recently saw an article about challenging yourself to try something new for 30 days. It’s not new, but I’m going to challenge myself to walk every day throughout May. I walk fairly often, but also sometimes look for excuses not to do it. Not this month! Keep in touch and let us know how your challenge works out!

You can do it, Sarah! I admire your choosing to do this for Choppy and yourself. In honor of my brother running his recent Big Sur Marathon, my girlfriend Anna and I walked ten miles. Last week, my youngest and I didn’t measure miles but walked paths up and down in a hilly park called Highbanks for an hour and a half! 🙂 working 9 to 10 hours a day (on my feet except lunch and 2 -15 minute breaks) in Spring and Summer makes me not want to walk every night.
I also am impressed you already know from your fitbit you are exercizing and walking several miles a day!! You go, girl! 🙂

Thanks! I am hoping it does both of us some good. Not losing weight or the like, just realizing how good it feels to get some exercise in would be enough for me! I sit around all day at work, so anything that gets me a little exercise has to be a good thing (and will hopefully make up for the hours I don’t get any during the day!).

What a great idea for both of you! You will be surprised how quickly Choppy slims down and tones up! (Sorry – but dogs do this a Lot quicker than us humans, but you will reap the benefits too.) I try to take my dogs out every day – not so much for the exercise, but so they can sniff everything. With their keen sense of smell, it is a whole new world out there.
Now you have better weather on the way, it’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy yourselves. Have Fun! And I look forward to your posts. 🙂

Thanks! And I did choose a good time of the year for this – at least we won’t be starting in the snow. I still get Choppy out in it, but it’s a lot less pleasant for both of us than sunny, spring weather!

Good luck on your dog walk challenge. Great idea. I have a Fitbit too and try to walk 10,000 steps a day but it’s difficult when you have to work sitting at a desk – but that’s just excuses!

Thanks! I have the exact same problem – I have to sit at a desk for work, so I don’t get the steps in. On the weekends, I demolish that step goal!
