Now that the snow is melting and it is warming up, we’re getting more wildlife. Apparently, said wildlife doesn’t realize these are bird feeders, not raccoon feeders.
Despite the fact that a lot of people don’t like raccoons, I think they are amazing little creatures. I’m glad he was able to find a meal in your backyard.
I love them, too. Last year, in mid May, when we got our first 2 hives, after just days, I was fortunate to see a raccoon put it’s front paws on the table my son had built to put the hives on….just checking it all out…I got a photo of it walking away. I put 25 lb bell bars ontop of the hives. All wildlife should be appreciated…..they are part of our lives…learn to live with them.
I agree. Raccoons are so curious. Several years ago we had a mom raise her babies in the hollow of a tree we could see from our kitchen window. They were so fun to watch when they started getting out and exploring.
Sometimes we think it’s a raccoon here, too, that gets our birdfeeders down, but it’s also the deer! They nudge the bird feeders to get some grains out, and by that nudging they sometimes get the feeders off their hooks. Ingenious, isn’t it?
There are so many hungry animals. I find the squirrels ‘kinda annoying’…I buy ‘no mess birdseed’…so more expensive….squirrels help themselves…but they are hungry too….so I throw peanuts in the shell out to them…there is no food available with the ground frozen & many inches of snow….who wants to be hungry?
Our squirrels seldom if ever go hungry as there’s no “real” winter here in southern central Texas. They can find food all the time, especially as we feed the birds and there are always lots of seeds around. We do put out corn for the deer, but not to feed them [again, like the squirrels, they find enough], but to attract them to our garden.
We’re 25 miles south of Boston….ground is frozen for a long time & often snow covered…difficult for wildlife to find food. Interesting you try to attract deer. There are many deer here & many collissions with cars. We’ve been fortunate to see deer in our yard many times ….a few weeks agoI watched a deer on the snowy patio between the garage & house for about 10 minutes…nibbling shrubs…last week a mom & ‘older’ young one…last year a buck was eating tomatoes, from plants growing from the compost…I took photos!
We usually have deer around on our property every day, sometimes up to more than 20! I’m looking forward again fo their fawns. Can’t await that. As to them eating plants: that’s why we neither have a veggie garden nor (many) flowers around the house.
Here, so far south, we don’t have any harsh winters. So the conditions for wirldlife are better.
That’s fun to ‘pen pal!’ I wonder how soon you’ll see fawns? I have most veggies in pots on the deck…4 steps up…2 gates on the deck, to prevent deer & hopefully woodchucks from eating tomatoes, eggplants, herbs…the rest of the veggies are in pots on cementblocks, so bunnies can’t reach them…deer could. Lots of flowers in baskets, from shepherd’s hooks.

With all those deer around, we dont have a veggie garden. We have tomatoes and string beans and some herbs, together with my nursery of trees, in the former dog kennel. There, they are safe. We have some potted plants on our back porch. Usually, the deer don’t come that close. They do eat from a hibiscus that is directly at the wall of the garage, though. Poor stunted bush has survived all the “attacks”. 😉
Choppy should share some food with that poor little guy.

They are ‘free food feeders’, and when you’re hungry, that’s all you need to smell out. Thanks, Sarah and Paul, for feeding me.

I think raccoons are so cute. This one was very nice to eat and not take the feeder down or away….they do that sometimes around here. Hugs

We live near a large forest preserve in Chicago. The raccoons think our big green garbage cans with lids are “raccoon Bento boxes”.
