This week over on the 101 Travel Bits blog, we’re celebrating March 1st – Plan a Solo Vacation Day. If you’re looking for some solo travel tips, head over to the post. Here’s a sample of what you’ll find:
Pull Out a Deck of Cards
A deck of cards is a cheap and easy way to make friends. Break out a deck of cards and start playing a game of solitaire, and it’s only a matter of time before someone comes over to offer unsolicited advice. Ask them if they want to join you in another game, and you’ll find yourself with some new friends. (and you won’t have to listen to unsolicited solitaire advice).
Enjoy the post!

We took a pack of cards on holiday with us when we went to Hamburg for New Year, I think it was 1994. The ferry was delayed, so we started playing crib. Before long, we were playing a four handed game, then when more people got disgruntled, we changed it to rummy. New friends for a few hours, and soothed nerves and tempers.

I never travel without a deck of cards, whether I’m with someone or not. I’ve met a lot of people through card games – I am glad to hear I’m not the only one!

A pack of cards is so flexible. My Dad had a party trick called Little Willy telling a story of a little boy using a deck of cards. He never taught me how it worked, but I was fascinated every time, especially the three coppers and a judge (the aces, the Judge being the Ace of Spades). I can’t remember it all, but I loved it.
Then of course you have the soldier’s deck of cards as a bible, diary and almanac. Wonderful.

Just worked out it was 1992, not 1994.

She would – much better than Schooner. I bet he would cheat.

My other option was Queen of Hearts – but I think Top Dog works better for her.
