The first rather large animal we saw once arrived at Rocky Mountain National Park was an animal we regularly see here at home: turkeys. Thankfully, they weren’t the last animals we saw while we were there. More pics to come…

Coming from a place where turkeys are only domestic birds I was enthralled by the posses of them that I saw in New England. Enthralled to the point of a minor obsession it might be noted. I’m glad they were not the only animals you saw but I am thrilled with the picture!

I’m officially on turkey lookout! I just hope I see some nice and close – usually they are off in the fields, and my iPhone is not the best to capture those.

They get much easier to see this time of year as the crops come in!

I don’t recall many when I was a little kid, but by high school here, they were everywhere – including going after kids for their lunches while they walked to school.

Wow! I don’t really recall a lot in our area when I was growing up either. We have some, but they aren’t over running the area and certainly aren’t attacking people to get food. That’s crazy. We have turkey hunting season here, so, I think that helps to keep them in check.

We have two seasons on them. Considering how many we see, I don’t think the hunting is making any dent in their population (same with the deer!).

Do you think their natural predators have declined, allowing them to have a population explosion?

I don’t know – we have coyotes everywhere, and I would think they eat them. There are some roaming bears, but I doubt they actually do go after turkeys. Perhaps there are fewer roaming dogs – I’m sure they would try for a turkey if given the chance.

The coyotes should keep them in check, or at least I would think so. Strange.

I would think so as well – I’ve seen the aftermath of coyote-goose interactions, and it isn’t pretty for the goose. And geese can actually fly, so they would (in theory) be more difficult to catch.

Turkeys can fly too. Maybe not as graceful, or far, but they do fly. That’s how they avoid Tippy when she sees them.

All I ever see them do is get up into the trees – I always thought of them as like chickens. They can get airborne, but they don’t really fly.

They don’t fly a lot, but they can fly a little bit better than chickens. Still, they can get away from predators by flying into the trees.

Thanks – it was definitely more scenic seeing them there than at home!

30 at the most at one time…very regularly see the same group…one female limps….we never used to see them…now: crossing the road, eating strawberries & blueberries, roosting in trees….coyotes seem to keep some of the flock in check….

We have a large flock near the house which I see most mornings if I look for them. Not many come near the house, but we do sometimes randomly see one hanging out in the yard.
