Over the summer, I loved watching the Tuesday View posts of Eliza’s Garden at her website (which, in turn, is part of a regular feature at Cathy’s blog, Words and Herbs). Inspired by that, I thought it would be interesting to take a weekly picture of our backyard to see how it changes throughout the year. So, every Tuesday, I’ll head back there and take a picture. Then, at the end of the year (if I manage to keep this up), I’ll have 52 pictures to combine into a slideshow of how the yard changes throughout the year!
So far, I have five pictures from January, collected below. You would think that, this being Wisconsin, the yard wouldn’t change much from week to week. Thanks to a warm spell, you’d be very wrong on that point. Our yard looked like spring for a chunk of the month…and then winter returned.

Funny how you have a mildly green patch between the snowy ones already.

Right? That’s a March/April picture around here, not January. But it looked like that for several days. We’re supposed to get some unusually warm weather next week, so I’m guessing it will be back earlier than normal again (just to freeze up and get snowed on again, most likely).

Love the snow, hardly ever snows here. Rain on the other hand we have all the time.

This time of the year it’s mostly snow – though that week where it greened up we were rain central!

What a great idea. I may do that next year, if I can remember that long.

Maybe if I keep it up, you can just use our blog as a reminder!

That would work.

Great idea, Sarah! It’s fun to see where others live. It looks flooded on Jan. 24th 😮

It was flooded – and under that snow, it’s still flooded. I’m guessing it won’t recede now until well into spring – April or May. And it may well get higher before it gets lower – Paul’s garden is in the lower right corner, and that will likely get flooded before he gets to plant.

Whoa…you have a pond?! Very cool idea and your friend Eliza has a lovely website. Thanks for sharing it.

We do have a pond! Or, during the summer, an algae-growing and mosquito-breeding ground. My attempts to keep the algae under control last year failed, so this year I consider other options.

Ha! There are certain plants that might be able to help on both counts as well as recycling pumps. Algae and mosquitos don’t like moving water. 🙂

Based on our previous attempts to get it clean, we are going to have to try some sort of aeration in it. Unfortunately, it is a pond that goes dry and is really shallow even when filled, so we have to get something that won’t break when it gets dry. I really need to get back to looking for something, because spring will be here before I know it!

47 days and counting. 😉

You might know about these methods…but Google: “what to put in ponds w/ mosquitoes.” There are safe was to manage them.

We have tried some – it really needs aeration. It gets all the detritus from the neighborhood in it, so it is super fertile and grows algae like nobody’s business.

Too funny! I’m doing the same thing this year too. I’m trying to take a picture of my back yard every few days and want to combine them into a time lapse video at the end of the year. My yard changed like crazy over January too.

I’m already enjoying mine, and we’re only a month into the year!
It hardly looks like January in that one picture – it’s like I snuck in a picture from the future. It’s nice to know we’re not the only ones with crazy weather.

Very excited about this 🙂 So you had the warm up teaser too where you live. It has turned cold and just spitting snow but I still remember those few beautiful days!

We did have the warm teaser – not quite so warm as others, but we’ll take anything above freezing in January and enjoy it! We’re like you now – back to the snow and frigid cold. Thankfully, we’re getting some warmer temperatures in a few days. I am looking forward to them!

I sort of wondered when I started if I would be motivated to keep it up – but it’s already fascinating to see how it changes. I’m somewhat tempted to start doing it more often – maybe not on a regular schedule, but trying to add another picture in every week.

Love it! Putting the pix in a slideshow is better than the way I had mine last summer. I might grab the idea for next time. 🙂 You’ve reminded me that I wanted to post a winter view of the valley. I’ve been waiting for a good storm, but like your area, it’s been warm and melting for most of Jan.

I had no idea how I was going to do it, then saw the slideshow option on WordPress. It even put the dates on the pictures for me, so it worked perfectly.

I’m enjoying it – I suspect the next few months will be a lot of fun with it (and who knows, I may actually get some plants in around the pond this year, so it might really change!).
