A nice, long walk to start of Day 106 – again, dodging the rain like on Day 105 (though no Choppy, who is at the kennel for the weekend – she’ll be back on Monday!). No picture today. Instead, a video of my attempts to teach Schooner to sit. They’re going OK – for a cat. Choppy had the sit mastered in under five minutes. We’re into Week 2 with Schooner’s training, and this video is still one of the good times (he doesn’t always do it this well, I’m sad to say).

I hope so! He’s doing quite well. He obviously gets it at some level.

Or, he’s giving you a false sense of winning LOL 😀

Being a cat, this sounds like a distinct possibility.

He is doing OK! There were some skeptics when it came to this, but I am thinking they are quickly being proved wrong.

How cute!
I never noticed the cute tuft of white hair on the end of Schooner’s tail…
Train a cat?…… I need to go mull that….

When we got him from the humane society, they’d dubbed him “Tipper” because of it! It’s very cute.
And this whole training thing is not fun. Even though he gets it, he doesn’t really want to do it, and he doesn’t get that look of recognition that he’s done something good, like Choppy does.

I will turn this cat into a dog-like creature, if it kills me!

I’m suitably impressed! 🙂 Keep practising, cos you Can teach a cat all sorts of tricks – I’ve seen it with my daughter’s Maine Coon, who loves her food soooo much, she has been trained to beg, roll over, bow etc It is hilarious to watch, all for an amount of food that my dog would eat in one bite! 🙂

This is amazing! I was going to be pretty satisfied with “sit” but I may have to try further tricks!

You’d be surprised what you can get a cat to do if food is involved … and if it feels like it! 😀

I’ve got some ideas now – the cat doesn’t even know what’s coming.

Too funny, I had no idea you could even train a cat!

I didn’t know you could either, except in a general sense that I had seen some trained cats on TV or in variety shows. Then I saw an episode of My Cat From Hell and they taught one to sit. So I tried it out!

Loved it! That’s the only trick my 12 year old Norwegian Elkhound has ever learned. I’ve totally given up on her, at least she’s a pretty dog, lol.

Hey, it’s a trick – that’s more than most cats. So she has that entire species bettered.

I didn’t know one can train cats. Always believed the thought implied by the expression, ‘like trying to herd cats’ meant they are too independent to train. I’ll watch your progress with interest. 🙂

It’s not easy, I’ll tell you that. It makes me miss training Choppy, who seemed to not only enjoy being trained, but got excited when she mastered something. The cat just looks at me with the same bored expression no matter what.

Cats aren’t into pleasing anyone but themselves. It’s against the Cat Code of Ethics. 😉

I just wish that code was written down somewhere for us dog people to read.

Oh! You must be a good trainer, how could cat learn such. Amazing!

It just takes patience – I am hoping that now that he knows one trick, he’ll understand that these random words and signals I’m giving him mean he needs to do something (and a treat will follow).

“I know exactly what she wants but don’t want to do it. I’ll throw in the odd sit just to string her along.” Or am I too cynical about poor Schooner?

He’s a cat – I’m pretty sure all cynicism is well-placed.
