We woke up this morning to the chilliest temperatures yet for the fall – it was 22º F (-5.5 º C). I broke out the winter boots, bundled up, and we got our two miles in for the morning walk.
When we got back, it was light enough to see the pond in the backyard. Overnight, it had completely frozen for the first time this fall. I decided to take a bonus backyard view picture for everyone – and if I get my act together, in future years I can post other “first freeze” pictures and see the different dates of those first freezes.

Very! Our walk was actually nice, though – it’s all about dressing for the temperature (or not going outside when it gets truly cold!).

It’s kind of a misnomer of a title, as we have had a few frosts over the last couple weeks. I just couldn’t think of anything better, and I was in a hurry when I posted it!

Oh, I’ll think this is downright balmy at some point during the winter – we have to go out when it’s this cold, or we’d be stuck inside for several months a year!

Yes I guess so. Still, cold as you may be, I’d rather freeze than be burned to a cinder just hanging washing on the line . . .
If you’ve ever watched Vin Diesel’s movie Chronicles of Riddick, I always feel like that Furian walking out into the flaming heat on that planet!

Oh….that is so chilly! Good for you for walking! It’s a “cool” 44° here, just south of Boston…..going to get chilly tonight…heat went on for the first time.

We had to turn ours on a couple weeks ago, but now we really need it. I’m hoping it will warm back up for another few weeks. I’m not ready for winter yet!

We’ve only had the one frost so far, but the winds are bitter. Our ‘yellow condoms’ from the boat are going to come in useful so we’re glad we didn’t get rid of them.

I had to put my big winter boots on yesterday for the first time – thankfully, it warmed up a bit today so I was back to the tennies!

I like the idea of posting first freeze dates. It would be interesting to see if there is a trend. It supposed to get that cold here tonight. There goes the last of the toughest annuals that have been hanging on, like nicotiana and calendula. Oh, well.

I filled a 3rd jar with Cuphea cuttings today…that plant grew so well! Brought 2 Hibiscus, 2 Amaryllis & a few other plants in. Getting to soon be VERY chilly here …oh, brrrr

I should pick up some amaryllis – I was thinking to get some hyacinth bulbs to force, but unless I find some that didn’t get sold, I think I’m out of luck there.

That’s what I was thinking – it has to be pretty cold to freeze up the pond, so you’re definitely into late fall or winter by the time it happens.
And my fuchsias, which live under an awning, finally bit it with this freeze – all that seems to be left are the petunias under the awning. Those guys hang on a long time!

Burrr! It’s cooler here too, but not that cold. I think it is supposed to be 30°F one morning this weekend. That wouldn’t be too bad if it would gradually get cold, but there is always a roller coaster in the fall, with some days in the 70°s and others in the 30°s. Those drastic changes make it hard. I love your picture, with the sun just coming up on the tops of the trees.

The pond is best in winter – it makes a great place to ice skate. Unfortunately, last winter we didn’t get the best skating weather, so it was unused. This year, I’m hoping for better weather – cold, but not too cold!

You can skate on it!!!!! How cool. I remember being in Amsterdam and watching whole families go skating on a pond in one of the parks. They brought kitchen chairs for the old people to sit on and it was almost festive. Pity is was sooooo cold, the Big T and I didn’t really appreciate it.

It’s a wonderful skating pond! Our house has a light that shines right on it, so you can do night skating as well. As long as you can stand the cold, it’s a great way to get outside in winter.

Since the truth has been discovered that this picture is NOT the FIRST FROST, one must question whether Choppy and Schooner are real as well? Is this potentially a distraction from the real issue affecting EVERY AMERICAN’S LIFE…are you part of the Russian conspiracy? I have already contacted the NSA, CIA, FBI and CDC (although this last agency has nothing to do with security, I like talking to them.) Our weather here would be very cooperative for you – this morning’s frost was just gorgeous. Hopefully the pics I have of it will do it justice when I post them on the Dog Walk Challenge tomorrow or a Midnight Mutts post later in the week.
