We saw this monarch the other day while on a quick walk at work.
But is it a male or a female? Let’s take a closer look and find out!
It’s a male!
(And many thanks to Eliza, who sent me out looking for more information on monarchs, including how to tell this one is a male. )
That’s quite interesting.

It’s nice to know! I learned how to tell the difference, last month. Nice that he opened his wings! Great you’ve seen a few Monarchs!

I was so happy he did! I’m hoping to get some more afternoon walks in this coming week to see if I can find some more.

How did Choppy react?

She wasn’t actually on the walk where I saw this one. When she was younger, she would occasionally give a butterfly or moth a chase, but now she ignores them. Schooner, though, would definitely attempt to kill it!

Our bookgroup has just read Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver which I found enthralling. The plot pivots on monarch butterflies.

Gorgeous! And what fascinating info on how to tell its gender. I had no idea!

Until recently, I had no idea either – I’ve been learning at least a little bit about them this summer. Hopefully, all that info will stay in my brain until next summer as well!

I’m happy to give you the mention – I’d still be like, “oh, a pretty butterfly” without you.

Awesome! Sadly we don’t get any monarchs in Europe (apart from the blue-blooded ones of course π).

Ha! We don’t have very many of those (except when they’re on vacation).
