We had several black cats growing up , so I’ve never understood why you wouldn’t want one – they make great pets (I mean, clearly they aren’t as awesome as black dogs, but for cats, they are just fine).

Tippy is with you Choppy. We need a black dog appreciation day.

Yay! We have two dogs on board!

Black cats are fascinating because, when growing up in England, a black cat crossing your path was a sign of imminent good fortune. Here (Ontario, Canada), a black cat has ominous connotations! If a black cat has an identity crisis, we can see why! 🙂

I didn’t realize anyone thought of black cats as anything but bad luck – fascinating!

This is from a Freshstep kitty litter email I received: “Sailors thought that having a black cat on ship was a very lucky thing indeed. Not only were the obsidian felines thought to ensure a safe trip, but they improved morale and of course caught disease-carrying rodents.”

Colin pointed out that in England, apparently black cats are also good luck (but bad luck in Canada as well). Something appears to have been lost in translation on those ship voyages between the continents!

Somebody once described England and the US as two countries separated by a common language! They are currently also separated by quite different politics… but that’s not relevant here! 🙂

I always enjoy that saying – it so often seems true!

I read Colin’s comment….positive on the right of the Atlantic…negative on the left…”what happened?” 😮🙈

Pioneers drank salt water on their way over perhaps? That could explain the many language changes; strange expressions; odd spelling; weird accents …. and Donald Trump! (Couldn’t resist!)

Don’t worry choppy. On my calendar, every day is black dog with a little color day.

Choppy thanks you (and she thinks that everyone should feel the same way)!

😍 Choppy and Schooner: you are both awesome!! It’s not the color of your fur….hmmmm….it’s how sweet you are!,

If it’s how sweet they are, Schooner has some explaining to do!

Having had a black cat or too, I can concur with this holiday!

Apparently, they don’t have the reputation for bad luck on your side of the pond as they do on ours!

National black dog day is supposed to be October 1st Choppy, Can’t wait to see what your mom blogs that day

I put it on the calendar – we will definitely have to celebrate!

My first kitty was a black Manx. A gentlemen from the beginning, he lived 18 years. We still talk about him!

Awwwwww….long life, maybe because he couldn’t get his tail caught 😮 What did you name him? I remember lots of our pets’ names from when I was little…I wonder why that is?

I remember every single pet I ever had. Loved them to pieces. 🙂 You will laugh, his name was ‘Fatty’ because he was the plumpest kitten I’d ever seen!

We had a little kitty named “Butterball!” I do remember so many names! Kitties, dogs, parakeets & then my own guynea pigs, rabbits, cats & dogs!

When we were little, lots of our pets would get the name of the one who preceded him/her, with the addition of a “2” on the end – Pedro 2, Yankee 2, etc. Thankfully, they were not aware of the (usually quick) demise of the pet who had preceded them.

I’m sure he won’t be the last cat to have that name!

There’s a special breed called: “Bombay Cat”…(you can look that up)

Ooh, Bombay Cat? I’ve never heard of it – looking it up now. Very pretty – it looks a lot like one of our cats growing up (his name was Cher – yes, his name. We also had a female budgie named Mr. T, so we clearly had no idea what we were doing when it came to naming animals).

You should! They don’t get adopted as much, and they are supposedly healthier than others.

Well, Choppy isn’t black overall. 😉 So we should invent a Black-with-some-white-dog-day. 😉

Good point – or perhaps we should just have a Choppy day!

A Choppy-Day! 😀 That’s a bright idea, dear Sarah!

I had a black cat who thought he was a dog! He wanted belly rubs and greeted me at the door when I came home from work. I do, however, agree with Choppy that black dogs deserve a day of their own as well. 🙂

This is true! I’m sure Choppy feels she could be more appreciated – more bacon, more treats, etc. I suspect without humans keeping tabs on her food consumption, she would weigh a lot more!

I hear you ! I have one too, that would probably be one of those 600 pound people but in dog form… Okay, slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean 🙂 I know that sounded weird 🙂 (It’s been a long day)

Yeah I don’t get it either. It is always the black dogs left at rescue centres. 😦

We’ve only ever had black dogs – they’ve been great pets, which just makes it sadder, knowing they were the dogs who would have been at greater risk of being put down.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, but at least your black dogs had a chance and a great life. 🙂
Over here we have many No Kill rescue organisations (they will even take animals from the SPCA – who will put them down) so the animals should all have a chance to be adopted; like old Mr SL, who was in a rescue centre for nearly eleven years.

We have two black cats (sisters) and a tabby one. Think all cats (and dogs for that matter!) should have their own celebration day! I have a poetry blog here on WordPress and some of my poems are about cats in case you have time to look? Have a good weekend, Sam 🙂

I just got a kitty recently. She’s a black and white tuxedo kitty and she’s awesome. Cats are just more awesome…or “awesome-er”.

Some people in our house like the cat more than others – Choppy and I tend to firmly be in the “what is going on with that crazy creature”? camp!
