A new feature – not necessarily something that is going to be regular, but a little change of pace on the weekend. I see a lot of wildlife around the house and I take pictures of it. I’ll sometimes be posting it here on the weekends, as the name implies.
This week, a family of sandhill cranes I saw hanging out by the side of the road on my way home from work.
How beautiful ! You really do live in amazing surroundings 🙂

We do live in a beautiful place. I think we get an extra large number of cranes because we live about 30-40 miles south of a place called Horicon Marsh. It’s one of the largest freshwater marshes in the States, so I think we get a lot of wildlife heading that way.

It always makes me happy to see wildlife – these cranes hang out near this location pretty much every day, so I get to see them regularly.

Thanks – I do love seeing them. We see a lot of them nowadays. I don’t recall seeing so many, even a few years ago.

They seem to be – I see them pretty regularly (they hang out in the same general area on a road I drive a couple times a week). Hopefully things will continue to go smoothly!

We are lucky to have them! (Also, your post got sent to spam – I thought I had solved this problem for your comments a while back, but apparently not!)

Thanks, Sarah, for “freeing” me. Let’s see if this comment [via MS IE] arrives. Sometimes this works better than Firefox. But there’s also the dang Anti-Spam Software WP uses. I was told there is NO whitelist to make some comments permanently go through. Their policy is “onve a spammer, always a spammer”. The reasons they gave me are absolutely not logical, but it is as it is. We’ll have to put up with the fact that WP is disinterested in responding to their customers’ needs. 😦

It really is nice to have wildlife – even when it’s the sort of wildlife coming to the yard for snacks I don’t intend to give them.

Wow! Never seen those around here! Gobbles a lot, sometimes many times a day (but not in at least a week) a huge Coyote at my neighbors’ exactly a week ago. Saw a Katydid today. Please keep sharing!

We have a giant marsh about 30-40 miles north – Horicon Marsh. I think that attracts a lot more cranes than most places, but we’ve also had more this year than I can ever remember having before.

We have a lot of them around here – though it seems like more now than ever before. That said, they are often difficult to see, so perhaps I’m just seeing more because I know what to look for.

Very nice. I will keep my eyes open for them this winter. They might migrate to Arizona for the winter.

Gorgeous capture! I love the red details on some of them. (Maybe the male’s?) This was a wonderful share, too.

The adults have the red – the other two are the juveniles. They’ll get the red soon enough!

I thought sandhill cranes were an endangered species. I just looked it up and the Mississippi Sandhill crane is. I guess the species in your neck of the woods is not, considering you see them all of the time. They are a very majestic species and, living near a marsh, I’m sure you DO see lots of interesting wildlife.

In theory, we could see a whooping crane – as of a few years ago, there are some in Wisconsin, but I haven’t ever seen one in the wild (as there are only something like 100-200 in the state, I would have to get very lucky or actually set out to go find one).

That would be extremely cool to see.

Thanks! I’m always excited to see these guys. We didn’t see many of them in the past, but especially this year, we have been seeing them all over around us.
