There is disturbing news on the dog walk front this week. I won’t get into the dirty details, but Choppy came upon a bunny nest while we were out and about. Things did not go so well for two of the many babies.
On a happier note, we have a lot of blackbirds around. You see them chasing crows, hawks, and all sorts of other birds when they get near their nests. This week, I saw a blackbird chasing a bird I have never seen one chasing before: a heron.

Way to keep up the mileage, especially when the weather is extra toasty. Sorry about the bunnies. Sadly the circle of life happens when different facets of Mother Nature collide. Elsa recently decided to check out up close and personal what bunnies are all about here too. 🐰

I think I was surprised by the reversion to this crazed dog – it was like nature had completely overcome Choppy’s domesticated self for a few seconds.

There’s a wolf in the meerkat canine. Just take a rabbit or a squirrel to bring it out. 😇

Oh, no! I had dogs growing up, and they always chased rabbits when we took them out in the hills. I never imagined they’d ever catch one, but one time, to my surprise, the male caught a cotton tail that poked its head out of a hole at the wrong time. It was surprising.
The good news is that Choppy is too cute to be Cujo, so I think you’re OK. 🙂

Choppy has been chasing them for years – it took her running into a bunch of helpless babies to finally catch some. That just doesn’t seem fair to the rabbits.

Uh, oh ☹️. My kitties have caught several bunnies, not this year, a garter snake & a frog ☹️ & several birds. My dog caught a squirrel, who lost it’s footing & fell out of a tree & 2 woodchucks.

Choppy usually just corners animals and has me rescue her from the situation. These bunnies were an entirely different matter.

A couple of times in my life I’ve seen well mannered doggies revert to their true nature, scary when it happens, at least with cats you know they’re vicious at heart!

And as bad as a cat can hurt you, a big dog is an entirely different manner!

Oh no, I never thought Choppy would actually catch any bunnies! One of our cats used to leave us dead bunnies in the hall occasionally, usually with the ears severed and laid in neat parallel lines.

I really didn’t think she would either – she still hasn’t gotten close to catching a full-size one. These poor ones were like sitting ducks. Though I will be grateful they were quickly killed and she didn’t bring me only pieces of them!

Aw, sad to hear that, but she can’t be blamed, she is just following her instincts. Scavengers probably made use of the wee ones, nothing is wasted in nature.

They were (surprisingly) still there the next day. It’s near where I saw the coyotes, so I can’t imagine they’re still there.

Choppy your just being a dog! Dog instincts…. We don’t get any rabbit sitings here in Cali, but our dog loves to go after birds. She’s a chocolate lab, she loves the squirrels though!

Our squirrels just tease Choppy – unless one falls out of the tree and into her mouth, they are probably safe from her.

Oh no! That is so sad, poor defenseless bunnies 😦
You both did great mileage with your walks though….this is a happier subject . Well done !

It is a much happier subject – I wish I didn’t know about the bunnies!

I am sorry to learn about the bunnies. But Choppy is being a dog – it is her nature. 🙂

It is just her nature – I forget that sometimes, because almost all the time, she is a nice, domestic, no troubles dog.

Sorry about the bunnies. Tippy has found a nest before and brought one after another baby into the yard to eat. It really doesn’t seem fair to the bunnies, but, it is mother nature’s way of keeping the population under control and feeding other wild animals. It does make me sad when I see it.

I’m guessing there are a few gardeners around here who would be thrilled to have Choppy take out a few bunnies. I would rather not see it while I am standing right there, though!

Thanks! We’re having another good week – I think we’ve walked over 3 miles every day this week (that usually ends on Friday, because we go out for supper).
