The cold has returned – I can’t wait for spring!
Date: January 4, 2017
Location: Home
Length: 1.5 Miles
Temperature: 8° F (-13.3° C), feels like -10° (-23.3°) – but only about 1/5 of that was outside, as we got cold and went in
Who: Sarah & Choppy
And a video, because I haven’t done one in a while – it’s a typical Choppy day. You might notice she isn’t scratching as much. We’ve started giving her fish oil, and it seems to be working quite well to keep her skin moistened.
We’ve used fish oil capsules and also coconut oil on different occasions to keep Ray’s coat healthy. He loves coconut oil! 🙂

Choppy loves the fish oil – she seems somewhat bewildered by the capsules and eats them oddly (she sort of tears them apart, even though they are small). But she does eventually get everything in her belly!

We drop one in with his bowl of food and it gets inhaled with everything else!

Choppy does not inhale her food. Sometimes it sits there all day while she…I don’t know why. Maybe she’s waiting for something better?

Did you come home at the last part of the video? Funny how dogs know before their owners come home!
I give my boys a glob of coconut oil on their paws daily. I put it on me also… I need to put it on them, so Breck doesn’t lick mine off!

We did come home right before the end – Choppy usually gets up when she hears me get out to get the mail (or, more likely, when I shut the door) or when the garage door opens. We give her plenty of warning we are on our way!

I swear the boys can hear hubby coming from miles away. Just like your fact sign post!

Good for you for at least trying it outside. I would have come back too! Tippy scratches some. I am trying grain free food. Seems to be helping some.

We did a short walk this morning as well, then hit the treadmill. I think tomorrow is the last frigidly cold day, so hopefully we’ll get back outside by Saturday!

I want to have Choppy Day in which I spend most of my time sitting on a sofa. No people, no screens, no worries! Can you even imagine?!

It would be amazing…at least until I went into phone withdrawal around Hour 2. Then I would probably get the shakes…it wouldn’t be pretty.
In related news, I probably am very badly in need of this sort of day!

Glad to hear she’s feeling less ‘scratchy.’ Bitter cold is no picnic – nice that you have the treadmill!

It has been a real blessing the last couple days in the cold! And you are the reason we have the fish oil, so thank you from us for the advice!

Me too! And I am sure she is, too.

Choppy is going for the “how many times can one dog get on and off a sofa in one day” record, obviously.

Obviously! And she is doing quite well at it!

Oh, b b b r r r r r ! Too cold in Wisconsin! 32° at 3:30pm, south of Boston. Windy & nippy walk this morning, the area was open, much nicer when we got to the woods. Atleast Choppy gets up to stretch! You won’t find her all contracted on the sofa, when you get home 😕

It is 3 right now – I don’t want to know where we will be by tomorrow’s morning walk!

We are looking forward to 2 degrees Celsius – next Tuesday! So warm and toasty! (And hoping the forecast doesn’t change before then.)

Choppy rocks! Glad the fish oil seems to be helping – oh this drying winter season!
We just got back from walking Molly – trying to beat incoming cold front and falling temps (but we dare not complain compared to elsewhere) – actually it was more like a run with rain arriving again.

I have been on more than a few of those very fast, avoid the rain walk/runs!

Congrats on the less scratching. Fish oil works but sometimes their breath can be too strong. Have you tried a teaspoon or so of coconut oil on her food? That helps too. #it’sadog’slife

I have been getting a lot of comments to try coconut oil. I think I have some in the cupboard. I will have to try it!

That stuff is my go-to panty item. It’s nearly magical with all the good it is capable of making right for critters and their uprights. 😉

I will have to see about using it more often! I bought it for something I don’t even remember now a couple months ago, and it has been sitting there unused ever since!

At least there is relief in sight next week (well, relief if you’re used to this cold weather – it isn’t that warm!).

Yes we get higher temperatures and more more snow! haha

Same here! If it hits the high 20s, it’s time to start worrying that the snow blower will need to come out!

8. Feels like -10. Feels like I’m fortunate here in PA. About ten degrees warmer…but we did have two inches of snow which in the Philly area means the National Guard is positioned to swarm in as needed. Everyone went out yesterday in advance of the forecast to get their milk, bread and eggs. They are back today just to make sure the store is there for the next storm. After all…we might get flurries tonight. (The horror!) Glad Choppy is feeling better. She’ll have a whale of a fish story to tell if this permanently does the trick.

Ha! I have never understood the whole ‘go stock up on food’ before the storm. Do these people always only have food for one day available in their homes? Or are they expecting to get stuck for weeks on end?

I think it is a combination of the two. Some buy daily but others plan for the apocalypse.
