Day 228 was a very cold walk. Very cold. And it’s getting colder before it warms up again. Poor Choppy made it about half a mile and then just refused to go any further, so we turned around and headed home (hence the shorter-than-normal walk).
Date: December 13, 2016
Location: Jefferson, Wisconsin
Length: 1.0 Miles
Temperature: 11° F (-11.6° C); feels like 0° (-17.7° C)
Who: Sarah & Choppy
We sometimes get down to those temperatures (and worse; -18°C is the lowest since we arrived here ten years ago). That’s a good time to be somewhere else, which explains, in part, why we’re bundling in to our motorhome on Saturday and going to Spain for a few weeks.
Have a great Christmas, and stay warm. Brrrrr.

I agree with the idea of being somewhere else – enjoy Spain! It is somewhere I would love to visit!

It’s only expected to be about five degrees Celcius warmer than here, but we’re going to a campsite run by an Anglo-Spanish couple, which means we end up with a seriously good traditional English Christmas, with Spanish highlights – and someone else will be doing all the work!

Sounds like a most excellent plan!

Sensible girl Choppy! We’d refuse to go any further much earlier 😀

She didn’t even make it that far today (of course, it was also a lot colder today – it hardly seems possible, but it was!

It is somehow even colder today. It was -4 when we walked this morning, and felt like -19. I hope it doesn’t get quite that bad there! Thankfully, it is warming up a bit next week.

That is mind-numbingly cold! Maybe Choppy needs sheepskin boots? 😀

She needs something – the cold has started bothering her. I have to find her some boots she doesn’t object to.

You walked a mile in 11 degrees? My dog wouldn’t have even gone outside. He doesn’t even like walking in rain!.
I’m subscribing to your blog so I can vicariously enjoy your dog walking!

Oh, that was a balmy walk – it is even colder now!

At least you tried and made it a mile. I think Tippy would have been okay. It would have been me turning around. I just can’t take the wind when it is cold. If I don’t have something over my temples, I get an ice cream type headache.

The snow is pretty though.

I am very bundled up for the walks – as little skin as possible shows. Choppy actually gets cold before me. I keep a close eye on her to make sure she is OK in these temperatures.

Yes. That’s a good idea, to keep an eye on her. Dogs can handle a lot, but they do get cold too, esp. in those temperatures.

Most definitely. Choppy only made it about 1/4 of the walk this morning. I took her home and continued on by myself.
And then she stuck her head out the window for part of the drive to work. I do not understand how she determines when something is too cold to do.

I guess walking in it and just enjoying it are 2 different things. LOL Do you get to take Choppy to work with you every day? What kind of work do you do?

I take her some days – we have another dog who comes to the office, but they don’t get along. Some planning has to happen when she comes in! And I am a lawyer, but we don’t really have many clients in the office so having the dogs there doesn’t bother anyone.

That’s nice. Too bad the two dogs don’t get along. It would be nice if you could take her with you most days. Lawyer, huh? Don’t think I would have guessed that as your occupation…don’t know why, just wouldn’t have.

Today is worse – but we’re warming up a bit tomorrow (which means it starts snowing tomorrow as well – right now it’s pretty much too cold to snow).

We’re looking forward to warmer temperatures this weekend and next week (still not warm, but anything warmer is welcome!).

With all the racket geese make, we’d want to cut our walk short too. 😉 Well that and the big goose-egg of a wind chill. Ours was 4 this morning so I completely empathize.

That’s not a fun temperature! It’s the time of year when I start dreaming of warmer places pretty much hourly.

Travel pictures of warmer climates and hot drinks are the only thing that get us through the day.

I listen to a lot of Jimmy Buffett this time of the year!

Would Choppy sit in a pram covered in blankets while you push her around?

Probably. I can’t say I’ve ever tried it, though!

The geese said they’re cold, too!

I’m sure they are! When I think it is cold, I have to remember it could be worse – I could be in the water as well!

Looks like a very cold day… I am sending you two warm breezes from the Southern Hemisphere 😀 best wishes.

Choppy needs a sweater and booties. Not that she’d wear them or maybe she would with all the practice she has wearing costumes. I tried that on our last dog and it was NO WAY. At least you made it 1/2 mi. before turning around. I expect you are walking VERY fast! 😉

Choppy will wear the booties – she just doesn’t want to walk around in them. Perhaps if I put them on outside she might be better about walking in them. I just need to make her realize that they are helpful to her!

I highly commend her commitment and yours too. It takes a lot to actually rise and go to work in this weather. It is kudos to anyone who could rise and actually go for a walk in it.
Well done guys.

I am glad I have the accountability that comes with posting it here on the blog – I think I would have given up earlier without it!

I can’t blame Choppy for ending the walk. It really must have been unbelievably cold. Shame, and she is getting on in age, so maybe feeling the cold even more than usual.

I would think she might feel it more, and then she goes out and rolls around in the snow. I don’t really understand at all!
