The letter “F” was causing me trouble – and then this morning, I had about ten different ideas, all of which were abandoned when I remembered I had a French Maid outfit for Choppy.

French maids and a parquet floor: that reminds me of a holiday in France, when I was a small child. We stayed with friends of my father’s. Quite affluent, these people – different from us. Well, in (most of) their rooms they had parquet floors and the maids had brushes under their shoes to clean and polish the floors. It certainly looked like ice-skating! They seemed to float about.

Well, I’ve never seen them slip. It’s too long ago – it was in 1953 – for me to remember if they enjoyed this way of polishing the floor, though.

It is a beautiful messy (I say this not knowing what sort of messes they’ve created today – the cat has figured out how to open the kitchen cabinets, so things could get bad at home!).
